Ultrasound Technician Schools in Tennessee
Ultrasound imaging is one of the fastest-growing fields in medical diagnostic technology. An ultrasound technician uses high frequency sound waves to create images of internal organs, tissues, blood vessels, and other structures in the human body. These images help physicians to accurately diagnose many medical conditions. Ultrasound is also used for therapeutic treatment and prevention of some medical conditions. Training in ultrasound technology includes the operation and maintenance of specialized ultrasound equipment.
There are currently around 1,310 ultrasound technicians employed in Tennessee, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), earning mean annual compensation of $54,000. The highest wages for ultrasound technicians are paid in the Nashville-Davidson-Murfreesboro-Franklin area, at $65,410 and the lowest wages in the Kingsport-Bristol region at $44,960.
Seeking a Career as a Tennessee Ultrasound Technician
In order to work as an ultrasound technician, you must complete a certificate, associate's, or bachelor's program in the technology. These programs are offered by the Baptist Memorial College of Health Sciences in Memphis, as well as accredited online ultrasound technician schools. Certificate and two-year programs are available from the Chattanooga State Technical Community College. Both of these ultrasound schools in Tennessee are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges. Although ultrasound technicians are not licensed in Tennessee, it is a good career move to obtain certification from the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS).
If you choose to train and work as an ultrasound technician in Tennessee, you may find yourself immersed in country music. Tennessee is home to such music legends as Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, and Jerry Lee Lewis, as well as the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville.
