Although Las Vegas far surpasses the Reno-Sparks area in terms of population, wages for sonographers in the northern part of the state were slightly higher than in its southern half. Diagnostic medical sonographers in the Reno-Sparks metropolitan area earned mean salaries of $71,000 annually, with the top wage earners bringing in just over $90,000 per year.
Las Vegas, a city three times the size of Reno, employed 100 sonographers in 2009 at mean annual salaries just over $69,000. The top 10 percent of sonographers in the Las Vegas area earned annual salaries of $85,000 per year.
The rest of the state--primarily Elko in the north and the state capital of Carson City--employed an additional 30 sonographers at average yearly salaries of $69,120.
Nevada ultrasound schools include the College of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas. The school's Diagnostic Medical Sonography program earns graduates an associate degree.
